Airport Transfers

What Time Should You Leave for Your MCO Flight?

Ask ten people when to leave for a flight out of Orlando International Airport and you’ll get ten answers, most of them a guess wearing the costume of a rule. The airport publishes a number of its own, and it points at a different clock.

How early should you get to Orlando International Airport?

MCO recommends arriving at the security checkpoint two hours before scheduled departure. That wording does the work. Two hours standing in line at the checkpoint, not two hours pulling up to the curb.

For heavy stretches the aviation authority escalates to a 3-2-1 rule. Three hours for the ticket counter, two for the checkpoint, one for the gate, each counted back from scheduled departure. Over the holidays it nudges the whole thing to three.

Two hours is a checkpoint deadline, not a curb deadline. Park, ride the train and walk, and you have already spent part of it.

Greater Orlando Aviation Authority guidance

One number covers every flight here, which catches people out. Orlando International publishes no separate international figure, so the three hours you’ve been told to allow for a transatlantic departure came from an airline.

Which MCO terminal does your airline use?

Three checkpoints serve the airport, one per terminal, and none of them feeds another. Terminals A and B sit on opposite sides of one building and meet on Level 3. Terminal C stands on its own, opened in 2022, with a separate ticketing hall, baggage claim and screening hall.

The Terminal Link joins the buildings every four minutes, around the clock. The ride is short. The walk at each end and a second queue are what cost you.

Land at the wrong one and it costs you. An automated train called the Terminal Link joins them every four minutes, around the clock, but the walk at each end plus a fresh queue still eats half an hour.

Avelo, Frontier plus Southwest check in at Terminal A. The big domestic names sit in Terminal B, Delta and American and United among them. JetBlue shares the south building with nearly every long-haul international airline, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic and Emirates included. Trust the boarding pass over the airport’s own help page, which still lists a carrier that has gone. The same split decides where to meet your car at MCO terminals on the way home.

Why the fast lanes shut before a 6 a.m. MCO flight

MCO Reserve, the free timed-entry service for the security line, books up to seven days ahead and holds a lane at each checkpoint. Its hours are the catch. The Terminal A and B lanes operate from 5:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., covering departures between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. In Terminal C the lane stays open until 7:00 p.m., for flights leaving as late as 10:30 p.m. TSA PreCheck at Orlando keeps a 4 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. window.

The dawn flight problem

Stack those up and the dawn getaway flight, the one half of Orlando seems to book, falls outside all of it. No timed entry, no PreCheck lane, standard line only. A late departure out of Terminal A or B drops into the same hole.

Two widely read travel guides print the wrong lane hours and the wrong booking window for this, which is a decent reason to check the airport’s page yourself.

Checked bag cutoffs at Orlando airport, carrier by carrier

Airlines set these, the airport doesn’t, and they disagree with each other.

  • Southwest closes checked-bag drop 45 minutes out on domestic flights and 60 on international, then shuts check-in at 30 minutes domestic.
  • JetBlue works to a 45-minute domestic bag cutoff, and Orlando sits on its named list of airports where a passenger carrying nothing still checks in 45 minutes out.
  • Frontier closes its counter to check-in and bags together at 60 minutes.

Delta, American, United and Alaska set cutoffs airport by airport without one headline figure, so read your own confirmation.

One more trap waits at the gate. Southwest measures its 10-minute deadline against the original scheduled departure time, so a delay buys you nothing.

How long is the drive from Disney to MCO?

Nobody can answer that with a straight face. No transportation agency and no airport authority publishes a door-to-door drive time from the theme park corridor, and the figures on travel sites come from mapping apps sampled once.

Cars driving on a multi-lane Central Florida highway during the day under a hazy sky
SR 417 Exit 6 is the ramp from the Lake Buena Vista and International Drive side. The airport’s south entrance is Exit 17A, eleven miles along.

Geography is published. From Lake Buena Vista, International Drive and the World Center Drive side, the ramp onto the Central Florida GreeneWay is SR 417 Exit 6, and the airport’s south entrance is Exit 17A, eleven miles along. On the Kissimmee side Exit 11 sits six miles out, and car service in Kissimmee works off that shorter hop. The Beachline Expressway, SR 528, reaches the north entrance at Semoran Boulevard.

That stretch of SR 417 carries about 86,000 vehicles a day. It went to six lanes in late 2025 and gained incident-triggered Flex Lanes in early 2026, so a crash is the main thing left that can wreck your morning.

One pattern is measured instead of guessed. TomTom’s 2025 Orlando figures put the evening peak at 53.8 percent congestion against 35.4 in the morning, which makes the afternoon flight the harder drive.

Tolls on the road to Orlando airport are cashless now

Rental drivers get caught by this every week. Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise stopped taking cash on 19 January 2025 and the Central Florida Expressway Authority followed on 20 August 2025. SR 417 and SR 528, the two expressways feeding the airport, read plates and transponders only. With a transponder you pay the discounted rate. Without one, a camera photographs the plate and the bill lands with the registered owner at full price, plus the rental company’s handling charge.

Construction counts too if you’re starting from Davenport, Champions Gate or Celebration. I-4 Ultimate is done, and the live program is Moving I-4 Forward, with two projects in the visitor corridor, including work at World Center Drive this year.

Catching an MCO flight the morning your cruise ends

Forums argue about this one and no guide settles it. Everything hinges on when local authorities clear the ship, and no cruise line will put a clock time on that.

A family and other travelers walking with luggage beside a large cruise ship at port
Carnival will not sell a transfer against a flight earlier than 12:50 p.m. That is the line telling you which departures it is willing to underwrite.

Carnival prints the only hard figure, and it’s also the latest. Return flights, it says, must depart no earlier than 12:50 p.m. on debarkation day. That rule conditions the purchase of Carnival’s own transfer, though, and says nothing about what a traveler arranging their own ride can manage.

MSC gives a duration instead, warning that debarkation can take up to three hours after the ship docks. Royal Caribbean and Norwegian publish nothing. The Disney Cruise Line numbers in circulation, 11:15 a.m. domestic and 12:15 p.m. international, trace back to a panelist answer, not to policy.

Self-assist walk-off, where you carry every bag yourself, puts guests ashore near 7:00 a.m., ahead of the 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. crowd. It buys queue position and nothing firmer. Port Canaveral logged a record 8.6 million passenger movements in fiscal 2025, so the terminal fills faster each year, and scheduling for Port Canaveral cruise terminal transfers starts from the flight.

Returning a rental car before an Orlando airport departure

MCO publishes the return level for every on-airport brand, and that level shifts by terminal inside a single company. Hertz takes returns at R2 for a Terminal A departure and R1 for Terminal B. Terminal C keeps garages of its own, lettered C1 and C2. Thirty-six off-airport companies shuttle from Level 1 instead, slower by design, since that path adds an outlying lot and a bus back.

For all that detail, no time allowance is published anywhere. Treat the return as a separate leg and check the level against your departure terminal.

Leaving for MCO with young children and a lot of luggage

Loading time grows with the party. Four bags, two car seats and a folded stroller take longer at the curb than a pair of roller cases.

A family loading luggage and a car seat into a vehicle outside their home before a vacation
Gate codes, guard shacks and narrow residential streets all cost minutes a resort porte-cochere does not.

Vacation rentals add friction of their own. Gate codes, guard shacks and residential streets with nowhere to idle all cost minutes, and luggage comes out of a house instead of a hotel lobby. Anyone arranging Champions Gate transfers from a villa should expect a slower pickup than a resort portico.

Handing the airport trip to somebody else

Plenty of visitors give that leg to a rideshare or a prearranged car. None of the arithmetic above changes.

Prearranged pickups suit odd-hour departures and bigger parties, since the vehicle is assigned ahead of time and the pickup hour set from the flight. FS Premier Transport is one of several Orlando operators a traveler meets while comparing those arrangements. Most post route and vehicle detail, from private airport transfers from MCO through fleet options and Sprinter van rentals, and what separates one limo service Orlando provider from another comes down to vehicle size and scheduling.

The short version

Work backward from the flight, not forward from the alarm clock. MCO’s two-hour figure lands you at the checkpoint, not the curb, and climbs to three at peak. Confirm your terminal first, because each one screens separately. Expect both queue shortcuts to be closed before dawn and after late evening. Treat the checked-bag cutoff as the real deadline. Count the rental return, the villa gate and the stroller as separate minutes. On cruise debarkation day, give the morning extra room, because the ship clears when it clears.

Frequently Asked Questions

Twelve questions travelers actually ask before a departure from Orlando, answered from the airport’s and the carriers’ own published guidance.

Can you check bags before you get to the terminal at MCO?

Yes, at the remote counter beside Garage C and the train station. It takes domestic passengers only, opens 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., and shuts 90 minutes out. Alaska, American, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest plus United take part.

Do you still need a REAL ID to fly out of Orlando?

Enforcement began on 7 May 2025. Every traveler aged 18 and over needs a compliant license, a valid passport or another acceptable document. TSA says anyone it cannot identify will not be let through screening, and it publishes no figure for how much longer that takes.

Where can you see how bad the security line is before you leave?

The airport steers travelers to its own Orlando MCO app for checkpoint times. MyTSA, the federal app, blends crowd-sourced reports with historical averages, so lean on it for planning instead of live readings. Sites advertising live Orlando numbers are not official feeds.

Does MCO Reserve hold your place in line?

It books an entry window and nothing else. Slots are capped daily and go through the airport’s booking portal. The airport publishes no penalty for missing one and no average saving in minutes, which makes the booking queue insurance, not a shortcut.

Which day of the year is busiest at MCO?

The aviation authority forecasts holiday peaks instead of weekday patterns. Its Thanksgiving outlook put the heaviest day at Sunday 30 November, above 177,400 passengers, while the Christmas period topped out on Saturday 3 January 2026 near 196,212. No busiest weekday is published.

Can you walk between the terminals, or is the train the only way?

A pedestrian bridge links the train station to Terminal C. Reaching the A and B side from there needs the automated train. A shuttle bus also links the two buildings 24 hours a day, picking up on Level 1, which helps during overnight work on the people mover.

If you connect through Terminal C, do you clear security twice?

No. The airport states that those connections stay inside the secured area, so a passenger already screened skips it. Budget instead for the walk and the train ride between buildings, which is where connection time disappears.

What happens if you miss the check-in cutoff?

That depends on the carrier. Southwest rebooks passengers onto the next available flight. JetBlue warns that a late international check-in means denied boarding, delays included. Neither one treats a late arrival as negotiable, so the deadline is worth setting an alarm for.

How early can you drop a checked bag at Orlando?

There is a floor as well as a ceiling. JetBlue accepts bags no sooner than six hours before a flight, so an early resort checkout can leave you holding them. Few carriers publish this window, so confirm your own before planning a long wait airside.

Which toll transponders work on the drive to MCO?

E-PASS and SunPass both work on these expressways, and SR 528 also takes E-ZPass, Peach Pass plus NC Quick Pass. Drivers without one can settle up through the E-PASS app, Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal, or in person at an E-PASS service center.

Can you take a train to the airport from the resort hotels?

Not today. Brightline serves MCO from the intermodal station beside Terminal C, about a mile from the main building, but it has no stop near the hotels. SunRail does not reach the airport at all, so the road remains the only practical option.

How long does immigration take at Orlando International Airport?

Quicker than it was a couple of years ago. The airport credits upgraded passenger processing with cutting customs and immigration time for US citizens by 65 percent across 2025. Arriving passengers feel that gain, though it changes nothing on a departure, where screening and bag drop still set the pace.
